This Site – Our Context
Throughout the3rd3rd I try to be both honest and neutral. I’m not advocating, I’m only recounting. And, of course, your response to anything you find on this site is your choice.
I’ve attempted to present my thoughts and experiences unadorned. I’ve nothing to gain or prove in any regard by dressing them up. I give each item just a brief background explanation.
I’ve collected together a number of items on this site that were originally written over some years. Hence, there will (probably) be some repetition and, indeed, contradiction too. I’d apologise, but in reality all of us can find our feelings and opinions change over time.
I am creating this site knowing that, fundamentally, all people alive now are much as they always have been over past centuries. Your hopes, cares, loves, fears – everything that makes up the essential aspects of you today would be recognised by someone from 500 years ago. And hence I know that no thoughts or experiences I recount in the3rd3rd will be wholly unique to me.
But what does change with time is the context in which thoughts occur and experiences are lived.
My death and your death will happen in a world with a rapidly growing population, ever scarcer resources and an unpredictably changing climate. This is a reality that is unique to our time. And these facts are creating massive challenges for all of us – for all our lives.
We all need to both live our lives and face death with that context as our backdrop.
How we react to being in that context, facing those challenges, is a choice we can decide to make. We don’t have to be passive.
In turn, how we react to that context and those challenges will determine the quality of our lives and deaths.
the3rd3rd has been made with that context and those challenges in mind, with the hope that it will go some way to help improve that quality.
